Dental Patients - Questions & Answers
- How often should I visit a dentist?
According to The American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines visiting a
dentist is recommended at least twice a year for a checkup and professional
cleaning.
- What happen at my dental appointment?
Several exams are performed to determine the direction for treating your
teeth. Such as:
- A staff associate will review and update your
medical and dental history during your first visit.
- Your teeth and gums are examined.
- A simple screening test is performed for oral cancer.
- X-rays of your teeth are done as needed
- A complete TMJ (temporo mandibular or jaw joint) exam is
done.
- Your dental profile is profile is used to discuss a
diagnosis with you. If treatment such as a root canal (endodontics), braces
(orthodontics) or oral surgery is needed, we will plan to treat you in our
office or refer you to a specialist.
- After reviewing your dental health
situation, we will
discuss your options for treatment, you fee payment and help you to
determine the best plan to match your needs.
-
What is plaque?
Plaque
is a sticky layer of bacteria that forms on teeth and gums. Following a meal
or snack, the bacteria in the plaque release acids that attack tooth enamel.
Repeated attacks can cause the enamel to weaken, eventually causing tooth
decay. Many of the foods we eat cause plaque bacteria to produce acids. If
you snack often, you could be having acid attacks all day long. Plaque that
is not removed with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth can
eventually harden into calculus or tartar.
- What are the problems of Plaque?
Plaque produces substances that irritate the gums, making them
red, tender or bleed easily. After a while, gums may pull away from the
teeth. Pockets form and fill with more bacteria and pus. If the gums are not
treated, the bone around the teeth can be destroyed. The teeth may become
loose or have to be removed. In fact, periodontal (gum) disease is a main
cause of tooth loss in adults.
-
What causes the gums to bleed?
Inflammation (gingivitis) is the most common reason for bleeding gums
which is caused by not brushing and flossing teeth effectively on a
regular basis. The result is the plaque to be left on the surface of
your tooth along the gum-line. So, the bleeding gums is the body's
natural reaction to the chronic presence of bacterial plaque. It is very
important to have a professional evaluation of your mouth, as bleeding
gums may indicate the possibility of gum disease (periodontitis).
- Anything I can do to prevent my
gums from bleeding?
It is very important to brush and to floss every day and to have
your teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Unfortunately, this
simple step is often neglected. So clearly, gum problems can often be
prevented by regular care/checkups. Certainly, correct brushing and flossing
is the best and least expensive way to prevent most dental problems to
happen in the first place.
- What is gum disease?
If the soft plaque has not been cleaned off your teeth on a
consistent basis, your body may undergo localized inflammation, which causes
your gums to bleed and will cause you to lose the bone surrounding your
teeth. The plaque can begin to harden and turn into tartar (calculus). This
build up of tartar sticks to the root surfaces of your teeth. The surface of
this is very porous and rough and can lead to increased accumulation of soft
sticky plaque, which in turn can cause inflammation and destruction.
Unfortunately, once you loose this bone it will never grow back. This
destructive process is called PERIODONTITIS (gum disease). Periodontitis is
thought to affect 50% of the population. Some individuals are more
susceptible than others.
- What can I do to stop bad breath?
Practice oral hygiene which include:
- Brushing and flossing to remove the food
particles trapped in your teeth which help bacteria to multiply in your
mouth.
- Drink water and slowly chew food to
continue saliva flow which wash away the bacteria build up.
- See your dentist for a full mouth exam
and to develop a plan to control your bad breath.
- What is dental amalgam and is it safe?
CDA describe amalgam
as a safe, durable filling material. Also,
amalgam contains a mixture of metals such as mercury, silver, copper, and
tin, which chemically bind together into a hard, stable and safe substance.
In fact, amalgam have been used by dentists for over 100 years.
- Is there a dental video for viewing?
Yes, ADA have several animated videos. Please click
here for more info.
- Is it possible to tell if I have gingivitis
or periodontitis (gum disease)?
The best way is to see your dentist because those conditions develop
gradually caused by formation of a layer of plaque, bacteria which is
rotting your teeth. During this process, you will not feel pain, however,
when you do, this means the damage to your teeth have been extensive.
- What are the symptoms for periodontal
disease?
- Red and puffy gums
- Bleeding gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Loose teeth: This is caused by bone loss
- Receding gums
- What are veneers and how can they improve my
smile?
Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-colored materials
designed to cover the front side of teeth. They're made by a dental
technician, usually in a dental lab, working from a model provided by your
dentist. You should know that this is
usually an irreversible process, because it's necessary to remove a small
amount of enamel from your teeth to accommodate the shell.
Your dentist may recommend that you avoid
some foods and beverages that may stain or discolor your veneers such as
coffee, tea or red wine. Sometimes a veneer might chip or fracture. But for
many people the results are more than worth it.
-
Asking your dentist about bleaching?
Your dentist can tell you whether whitening
procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types
of discoloration. For example, yellow-ish hued teeth will probably bleach
well, brownish-colored teeth may bleach less well, and grayish-hued teeth
may not bleach well at all. Likewise, bleaching may not enhance your smile
if you have had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front
teeth. The whitener will not affect the color of these materials, and they
will stand out in your newly whitened smile. In these cases, you may want to
investigate other options, like porcelain veneers or dental bonding.
-
What is in-office bleaching?
This procedure is called chair side
bleaching and may require more than one
office visit. Each visit may take from 30 minutes to one hour.
During chair side bleaching, the dentist will
apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect the
oral soft tissues. A bleaching agent is then applied to the teeth, and a
special light may be used to enhance the action of the agent. Lasers have
been used during tooth whitening procedures to enhance the action of the
whitening agent.
